How to Retrofit Existing Gates with Automation

Many homes and commercial properties already have gates in place, whether they’re swing gates or sliding gates, but not all are automated. Manually opening and closing gates every time can be inconvenient, especially in poor weather or when security is a priority. But it is possible to retrofit existing gates with automation to make access easier, safer and more efficient.

With the right setup, including articulated arm openers for swing gates or retrofit sliding gate kits for side-opening gates, you can modernise your current gates without needing to replace them. In this post, we discuss retrofitting existing gates with automation, whether you have swing or sliding gates, alongside the additional automation and access systems that can be added.

Retrofitting Swing Gates with Articulated Arm Openers
Swing gates are very commonly found in both residential and commercial settings. If your existing swing gates are manual, they can be retrofitted with automation using articulated arm openers. These systems are designed to replicate the motion of manually opening and closing a gate, making them ideal for retrofitting. We offer a wide range of gate openers to choose from, such as the Mini Modus LT Double Gate Kit and the Modus XLLT Double Gate Kit

They’re useful for gates installed on wider posts or pillars, as the arms can reach around obstacles and allow smooth operation. When choosing a kit, it’s important to check that the weight and width of the gates fall within the recommended limits of the system. Once installed, these systems offer reliable, quiet, and secure access with minimal visual impact on the existing gate. Below are some tips for how to install articulated arm openers to an existing system;

  • Position and Mount the Motor Units Correctly: Securely fix each motor unit to the gate post or pillar, ensuring accurate alignment with the gate leaf. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely, as incorrect placement can hinder performance. Use appropriate fixings for the material type, whether it’s brick, wood, or metal, to ensure a strong and lasting installation.
  • Attach the Articulated Arms to the Gate: With the motors mounted, attach the articulated arms to both the motor and the gate. Ensure they move freely without obstruction from nearby structures. Install at the correct angle and height to enable smooth, even movement. Proper fitting is essential to avoid strain on the motor and prevent jerky motion.
  • Set Up the Control Panel and Test Operation: Wire the motors to the control panel, which controls the gate’s movement, remotes, and safety features. Once connected and powered, test the gates thoroughly. Adjust the motor limits, fine-tune settings, and ensure all safety sensors are working to guarantee a smooth, reliable, and safe automated operation.

Retrofitting Sliding Gates with Sliding Gate Kits

For properties with sliding gates, automation is also achievable using a sliding gate motor kit. These kits typically include a motor, control panel, safety features, and a toothed rack that fits to the inside of the gate. The system works by moving the gate along a fixed track, making it an ideal choice for driveways with limited space or slopes where swing gates wouldn’t be practical. We have both single and twin sliding gate kits, with options that are perfect for retrofitting like the Dynamos 500 Sliding Gate Kit and the Dynamos 600 Twin Sliding Gate Kit.

When retrofitting a sliding gate, you’ll need to ensure the gate moves smoothly along its track and has appropriate clearance. The existing gate structure should be sturdy enough to support motorised movement, and any obstructions such as gravel or uneven surfaces should be addressed beforehand. Once the motor and rack are installed, you can open and close the gate with the touch of a button, greatly improving convenience and security.

Additional Automation and Access Systems to Consider
Retrofitting gates isn’t just about motorising their movement, you can also upgrade them with a range of access and security systems. These additional features not only improve day-to-day convenience but also enhance property security and provide greater control over who can enter or exit a premises. We’ve outlined some of the most popular automation and access options:
  • Keypads and Remote Controls: External wireless keypads can be installed at the entrance to allow access via a secure code, ideal for residents or staff needing regular entry. Handheld remote controls also offer an easy, on-the-go option for opening gates without leaving a vehicle. Both give you control over who can access your property.
  • Safety Features: When retrofitting gates with automation, it’s also key to include safety features like photo beam & towers, safety edge cards, and emergency stop systems. These components detect obstructions in the gate’s path and help prevent accidents by stopping the gate from closing on vehicles, pedestrians, or pets, ensuring safe and compliant operation at all times.
